Nominator's project description

Professor Vivek Malhotra is internationally recognized for his outstanding contributions to the mechanism of protein secretion and cell compartmentation. Over the last three decades, he answered fundamental questions of cell biology, revealing new mechanisms of protein secretion and developing concepts for their translational importance in removing proteins from the cell. In particular, he revealed how cells organize the secretory pathway and divide the Golgi complex into daughter cells during cell division. Professor Malhotra also succeeded in identifying a whole family of new genes, TANGO1, which are particularly suitable for channeling complex proteins out of the cell. During his stay in Germany, he will investigate potential implications of these principles for human fibrotic diseases.
